Onboard with Das Boot

Production still from Das Boot, U-96 leaves the pens in La Rochelle

Das Boot (1981) is widely acclaimed to be one of the best war films ever made, holds the claim to be one of the most expensive German films ever made and was nominated for 6 Oscars.

A large part of the films reputation is down to it’s peerless production design. It has long been a favourite film of mine and I am immensely pleased to be currently developing an interview Art Director Götz Wiedner to discuss the creation of the masterpiece U-Boat interior, the full size, fully enclosed set that played a large part in installing the films claustrophobic atmosphere.
